Earl of Selkirk

Earl of Selkirk is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is carried by members of the family Douglas - Hamilton. The subordinate title is Baron Daer and Shortcleuch. As the family and the higher-ranking title Duke of Hamilton has, the Earl title is always performed according to the Inheritance Act of 1688 by a younger brother and his descendants, only if no brothers, including descendants live longer, it falls to the Duke. The title is named after the Scottish town of Selkirk.

Was created the title on August 4, 1646 for the then twelve year old Lord William Douglas, third son of the 1st Marquess of Douglas. He later married Anne, heiress of the house of Hamilton, and reasoned with her family Douglas - Hamilton.

The Heir apparent ( expected successor ) is Lord Selkirk's eldest son, John Andrew Douglas-Hamilton, Lord Daer (* 1978).
