William Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton

William Douglas-Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Hamilton ( * December 24, 1634, † April 18, 1694 in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh) was a Scottish nobleman and 3rd Duke of Hamilton.

William was a son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas and his wife Margaret Hamilton. He was raised in 1646 for the 1st Earl of Selkirk.

The Earl married in 1660 Anne Hamilton, took as a result of this marriage with the heiress named Hamilton and became Duke of Hamilton. Among other offices, was the Duke and the High Commissioner from 1692 to 1694 High Admiral of Scotland. On March 14, 1689 was President of the Conference, which declared the Scottish throne vacant.

From his marriage with Anna, he had the following children:

  • Charles (1663-1739), 2nd Earl of Selkirk
  • John (1665-1744), 1st Earl of ruglen
  • George (1666-1737), 1st Earl of Orkney, Field Marshal, married Elizabeth Villiers
