Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne is a hereditary British title of nobility, which is supported by the Bowes-Lyon family. The title is twice, both in the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The family seat is Glamis Castle Glamis, Scotland.

Ceremonies

The title of Earl of Strathmore in 1606, to give Patrick Lyon, Lord Glamis 9. The third Earl in 1677 changed the title Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The second ceremony took place in 1937 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom of Claude Bowes -Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, father of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and grandfather of the present Queen Elizabeth II

Subordinate title

The Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne leads the subordinate title Viscount Lyon ( created 1677), Lord Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw and Strathditchie ( created 1677), Lord Glamis ( created 1445 ) and Baron Bowes ( created 1887). During the first three Would the Peerage of Scotland are assigned, include the latter in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The heir takes the courtesy title of Lord Glamis. The higher ranking title Viscount Lyon is not used to avoid confusion with the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

Another title

The dignity of a Baron Bowes had been created in 1815 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in favor of the tenth Earl to this to gain a seat in the House of Lords. However, he went out with his death in 1821.
