Earl of Wilton

Earl of Wilton, of Wilton Castle in the County of Hereford, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is supported by a branch of the Egerton family.

Award

The title was for Sir Thomas Egerton, 7th Baronet, created in 1801. This was a longtime member of the British House of Commons. Given that Egerton had no sons and his only daughter with Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster was married and had three sons, was the ceremony with the special clause that the title is transferred to the second and all the younger sons of his daughter could. This happened even after the death of the first Earl.

Subordinate title

The Earl of Wilton leads the same time conferred subordinate title Viscount Grey de Wilton, which is also provided with the described succession clause. This title also belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and is led by the eldest son of the respective Earls as a courtesy title.

More titles

The first Earl had already in 1784 been awarded in the County Hereford, in the Peerage of Great Britain, the dignity of a Baron Grey de Wilton, of Wilton Castle. This title became extinct due to lack of male offspring but with his death. Moreover, had from his father the title of Grey Egerton Baronets, of Egerton and Oulton inherited. This title was created in 1617 after the death of the first Earl to a distant relative.

The third Earl in 1875, seven years before he inherited the earldom, created Baron Grey de Radcliffe, levied in the County Palatine of Lancaster. He died childless in 1885, so that the barony, which belonged to the peerage of the United Kingdom went out.
