Earl Rivers

Earl Rivers was an English hereditary title of nobility, which was awarded three times in the Peerage of England. The title was not derived from a place, therefore not " Earl of Rivers", but from an ancient name that was carried within the family Woodville, " Redvers " or " mining district ", a name of the first Earl of Devon.

Ceremonies

The earldom was first awarded in 1466 for Sir Richard Woodville. He remained until 1491 in the family, as the third Earl died without male offspring.

The second award was presented in 1626 to Thomas Darcy, 3rd Baron Darcy of Temple Hurst. Due to a special succession clause of the title passed to his nephew at his death. He went out on the death of the fifth Earl in 1737.

Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers, was charged after his death in 1641 to the Countess Rivers in its own right. However, this title was not hereditary and therefore became extinct in 1650 with her death.

Subordinate title

The grandfather of the first Earl of ceremony of 1626 had been raised in 1551 for Baron Darcy of Chiche. The name of this barony then moved later to Baron Darcy of Temple Hurst. A further award of the title Baron Darcy of Chiche was in 1613 to the later first Earl.

The second Earl had this award five years before the seizure of the title from his father the title of Viscount Savage and created for his grandfather 1611 title of baronet of Savage of Rocksavage. This title also disappeared in 1737.

A new barony Rivers existed from 1776 to 1880. Holder was the family Pitt and Pitt- Rivers.
