Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers

Richard Woodville, Richard Wydeville, (* 1405 in Maidstone, † August 12 1469 in Northampton ) was an English soldier and nobleman.

Life

Richard has already served under King Henry V of England and his successor in 1425 was commander of the Tower of London. A year later knighted, he fought in France and on the part of the House of Lancaster in the War of the Roses. But the marriage of his widowed daughter Elizabeth already with the English king Edward IV led him to move to the House of York. King Edward made ​​him Lord High Treasurer, Baron Rivers ( 1448 ) and Earl Rivers ( 1466 ).

The favor that was bestowed the Rivers family, aroused the displeasure of the old noble families who soon turned into open hostility. Woodville was eventually sentenced to death and beheaded on August 12, 1469 in Northampton.
