The ruins Aranäs located on the shores of Lake Vänern, about 15 kilometers west of the Swedish town of Mariestad.

The Aranäs castle was built in the late 13th century on a promontory in Lake Vänern. The Reichsmarschall Tyrgils Knutsson, who was also guardian king Birger Magnusson, resided in Aranäs to 1306, when he was captured and executed. The castle and the accompanying Good afterwards went over into different hands. What happened to the castle, is unclear, but reports Olaus Magnus in his work on the history of the Nordic peoples in 1555 that in Årnäs the ruins of a former royal castle lie. The ruined castle was then used as a quarry, so that now only little is preserved. But give archaeological excavations that took place 1916-1925 and 1999 and 2001, a good image of the castle

The castle was protected to the mainland out by three moats and ramparts, ramparts and towers. One of the moat separated the forecastle from the main castle. The stone finished courtyard was several hundred meters long. The foundations of the building in the courtyard indicate an extensive castle complex. Numerous findings suggest also the existence of a royal palace.

The Aranäs castle was one of the largest Swedish castles of the Middle Ages.
