East Cleveland is a city in Cuyahoga County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It lies just to the northeast of Cleveland, is 3.1 square miles (8.1 km ²) in size and had (2000) 27,217 inhabitants, of which 93.4 percent are black.

About ten kilometers north-east from the city center of Cleveland, East Cleveland in 1895 was carved out of the same township. With the rail connection by the Nickel Plate Road, the city grew after the turn of the century very quickly. In 1920, she already counted more than 27,000 inhabitants. In the 1960s, a strong migration; the original white population moved away, while more and more Black nachrückten. 1984 East Cleveland was one of the largest cities in the region, which was inhabited by blacks.

In recent decades, East Cleveland had to deal with a difficult financial situation. The city is since 1988 under receivership, 2003 stood at $ 7.8 million property tax half of all revenues.

1955 went with the Red Line, a rapid transit between East Cleveland and Cleveland in operation. In the urban area, there are two stations, Louis Stokes Station at Windermere and Superior. There is also an express bus to Cleveland as well as a number of bus routes in the surrounding communities.

The largest local employer is the administrative and research Nela Park Lighting Division of General Electric, with around 1,200 employees.

To East Cleveland owns a part of the outer portion of Euclid Avenue, which was marked by 1860 and 1920 by numerous feudal estate and thus as " Millionaire 's Row ", "Street of the millionaires ," was known. In one of the houses John D. Rockefeller lived.
