East Somerset Railway

The East Somerset Railway was a British railway company in Somerset in England.

The Company was incorporated on 5 June 1856 to build a railway line from Witham Junction to Wells in the broad gauge of 2140 mm.

On November 9, 1858, the route to Wells and Shepton on 1 March 1862, finally opened to Wells. On July 21, 1873, the Great Western Railway was authorized to switch the line to standard gauge. On June 30, 1874, the takeover of the Company was approved by the GWR. The passenger was set on September 9, 1963. Goods traffic was reduced to the operation of a quarry of Foster Yeoman at Merehead and Cranmore for bitumen transport.

In 1975, a heritage railway on the section between Cranmore and Mendip Vale was established (east of Shepton Mallet ).
