Eberhard Umbach

Eberhard Umbach ( * 1948 in Bad Loud Mountain ) is a German physicist in the field of experimental surface physics and science managers.

He studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and in 1980 received his doctorate with distinction. After a research stay in the U.S. he completed his habilitation in 1986 also at the TU Munich.

Umbach was 1987-1993 Professor at the University of Stuttgart and from 1993 to 2007 professor of experimental physics at the University of Würzburg.

From 2006 to 2008 he was president of the German Physical Society.

In 2007, he became CEO of the Research Center Karlsruhe ( FZK). After the merger of the GRS with the University of Karlsruhe Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT ), he became its President on 1 October 2009. In October 2013, the KIT Eberhard Umbach adopted in retirement.

Until his retirement at KIT Umbach was also Vice- President of the Helmholtz Association for the field of energy research.
