Ecatepec de Morelos is a city of millions in the Mexican state of México and Cabecera ( capital ) of the homonymous municipality of Ecatepec de Morelos. The city has 1,655,015 inhabitants ( 2010 census ), the municipality a total of 1,656,107. The administrative center is the Barrio San Cristóbal Ecatepec.

Ecatepec de Morelos is located in the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México, the metropolitan area of Mexico City, and has several universities. The city has recently seat of a Catholic bishop and a cathedral. In addition, it is characterized by slums. A highway construction is planned. A neighboring city is Texcoco de Mora. The current Bishop Onesimo Cepeda is one of the most powerful of the politically active bishops.

At the time of the Aztecs Ecatepec was an important city of the Kingdom from the 12th century. In 1527 Leonor Moctezuma received the Ecomienda to her wedding with the Spaniard Juan Paez.

In 1815, the Mexican revolutionary leader José María Morelos was executed by the Spanish in this city. Today in the town is a monument in his honor. The second part of the name of the town goes back to his family name.
