Ecclefechan

Ecclefechan ( Scottish Gaelic Eaglais Fheichein ) is a city in the east of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland and has 746 inhabitants (as of 2001)

The village lies on the M74 from England to Scotland and am My Water, a tributary of the Annan River and is crossed by the A74. Until the English border is 14 kilometers to the next village 8 km. The village has a hotel.

Ecclefechan is the birthplace and final resting place of Thomas Carlyle. The famous philosopher was in the Arched House ( in English: "The Arched House " ) born. After Carlyle's going home he was laid according to his last will to rest next to his parents in Ecclefechan, though a burial in Westminster Abbey was approved.
