Ecgfrith of Mercia

Ecgfrith († December 796 ) was a king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia and Offa's son and Cynethryths. 787 Ecgfrith was co-regent of his father and followed him in July 796 to the throne. But despite Offa's efforts to secure the throne for his line, reigned Ecgfrith only a few months and died on 14 or December 17 796

Had Offa's marriage policy in relation to Ecgfrith significant impact on Offa's foreign and economic policy, and indirectly also on his coinage reform. The suggestion of Charlemagne, that of Offa's daughters should marry a son of Charles, refused Offa and imposed the condition that Ecgfrith then had to marry a daughter of Charlemagne. This led to a three-year dispute in the course of its ports Karl tactics involved for English traders. The fact that this was the importance of trade across the English Channel apparently, is considered to be one of the reasons for the Offa's coinage reform.
