The prairie - hedgehog head ( Echinacea pallida ), also known as Pale hedgehog head, is a species of the genus of sun hats (Echinacea ) in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae).

Features

The prairie - hedgehog head is a perennial plant that reaches the plant height of 60 to 100 centimeters. It has a taproot. The leaves are narrow lanceolate, 5 to 20 times as long as wide and entire. The ray florets (3) Measure 4 to 8 × 0.3 to 0.4 inches, are pale purple and hang down. The pollen is white.

Blooms from July to September.

Occurrence

The prairie - hedgehog head comes into the central U.S. before on dry, rocky clearings and disturbed prairies. In the eastern U.S. the species was naturalized.

Use

The prairie - hedgehog head is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
