Description

Echinopsis scopulicola growing shrubby, branched from the base, with several upright, columnar branches and reaches stature heights of 3 to 4 meters. The cylindrical shoots reach 8 to 10 inches in diameter. There are four to six large, blunt fins present which are tubercles. The located on them circular to oval areoles are white and are 1.5 to 3 inches apart. Spines are not usually trained. Sometimes three or four pfriemliche brown mandrels are present which have a length of up to 0.1 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped, white, fragrant flowers appear near the shoot tips and open at night. They are 16 to 20 inches long. The green fruits reach diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis scopulicola is common in the Bolivian department of Tarija in the province of Burnet O'Connor.

The first description as Trichocereus scopulicola by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1966. Roy Mottram put the type in 1997 in the genus Echinopsis.
