Eddie Byrne

Eddie Byrne ( born March 25, or according to other sources January 31, 1911 in Dublin, Ireland; † August 21, 1981 ) was an Irish actor.

Life

Byrne played at Dublin's Abbey Theatre and performed in the second half of the 1940s also in movies. His first leading role he took over in 1952 in Time Gentlemen Please, directed by Lewis Gilbert. The big breakthrough was his but denied and he took over in the following years mainly supporting roles. In the late 1950s he was busy and walked alone in the years 1954 to 1958 in more than 20 films.

In 1959 he played the role of Inspector Mulrooney in the British horror film Revenge of the Pharaohs. In 1962 he took over at the side of Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard in the classic film Mutiny on the Bounty, the role of the seafarer John Fryer. One of his last roles he took on in 1977 sci-fi epic Star Wars as General Willard.

He died in 1981 of a stroke.
