Eddie Hopkinson

Edward " Eddie" Hopkinson ( born October 29, 1935 in Wheatley Hill, County Durham, † April 25, 2004 in Royton, Lancashire ) was an English football goalkeeper. Although only about 175 cm tall, the 14-time England international was part of the squad for the World Cup in 1958 and was 1952-1969 a total of 578 official matches in box Bolton Wanderers.

Hopkinson started his football career in 1951 when unterklassigen club Oldham Athletic, but switched after three competitive games in the Third Division South to the first division club Bolton Wanderers, while he only had half-day footballer with Oldham, he gave after three months at the Wanderers his job and was Fully professional, also because of its Wehrplichtszeit in the Royal Air Force, he came, however, only four years later to his Erstligadebüt, but established himself immediately as performers in the league. After six months, he was already a regular Keeper of the English U -23 and in October 1967 for the first time in goal for the senior team, but was relegated to the bench shortly before the World Cup 1958 by Colin McDonald. Hopkinson in 1959 got a second chance as England's number one, but was ousted again and this time for good.

Although he only remained substitute in the World Cup, the summer became his most successful, as he took the win in the final of the FA Cup over Manchester United by some strong saves. After he was able to show up in the mid-1960s, good performances, he was ousted in the second half of the decade again and again by jüng6eren players on the bench before he had to withdraw due to injury in 1969 final.

After his playing days Hopkinson worked as a trainer, first the youth and reserve teams of the Wanderers from 1975 to 1979 as Kotrainer Stockport County - where his son Paul was at that time as a goalkeeper under contract, before he returned in 1979 as a goalkeeping coach at the Wanderers. Later he became a representative in the chemical industry.
