Edgar Tinel

Life

After studying in Brussels at Louis Brassin (piano) and François- Auguste Gevaert (composition), he began a career as a virtuoso pianist. On September 1, 1877, he married the poet Emma Coeckelbergh ( 1852-1921 ). In 1887 he composed the cantata " Klokke Roeland ", with which he won the Belgian Prix de Rome in music. In 1881 he succeeded Jacques -Nicolas Lemmens as director of the " Mechelen Institute of Sacred Music ", now the Lemmens Institute. In this role, he was invited by Pope Pius X, to exchange views on the future role of music in the liturgy in Rome.

1889 Tinel was inspector for the music schools in the Kingdom of Belgium. 1896 appointed him Gevaert to the Brussels Conservatory as professor of counterpoint and fugue, in 1909 he became director of the university. 1902 took him the Belgian Royal Academy of Fine Arts in their ranks, in 1910 he received the honorary title of court Kapellmeister. His students include Michel Brusselmans, Arthur Meulemans and Joseph Ryelandt.

His church music is in the style of Palestrina. His two concert -Te Deen, his oratory and his religious dramas let his admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach recognize. His piano compositions, however, can be rather Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms resound. The main publisher of his works were Breitkopf & Härtel and the Schott publishing house in Brussels.
