Edgard Leuenroth

Edgard Leuenroth ( born October 31, 1881 in Mogi Mirim, † September 29, 1968 in São Paulo) was printer, journalist, activist and one of the most famous Brazilian anarchists this time, in the era of " República Velha " ( "The Old Republic " ) ( 1889-1930 ). He was repeatedly arrested for his political involvement. Leuenroth was a journalist and, from 1909 to 1916, director of the anti-clerical newspaper "A Lanterna " ("The Torch "), whose publication was resumed in 1933. He also founded the newspaper " A Plebe " ("The plebs " ), an important organ of the anarchist press and with a strong echo in the working class in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In 1917, he was sentenced as a promoter of " Greve de 1917 " ( strike of 1917 ).

After his death, his family donated his large collection of press articles the Institute of Philosophy, History and Sociology ( Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humana ) of the State University of Campinas ( Universidade Estadual de Campinas ); the Edgard founded the Archive Leuenroth ( Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth ), one of the main sources of Brazilian social movements of the 20th century.
