Edinburgh Central Mosque

The Edinburgh Central Mosque ( " Central Mosque Edinburgh", official name of King Fahd Mosque and Islamic Centre of Edinburgh) is located in the Potterrow near the central region of the University of Edinburgh and the National Museums of Scotland. The mosque and Islamic center were designed by Basil Al- Bayati, the construction period lasted more than six years and the cost was £ 3.5 million. The main hall can accommodate more than 1,000 worshipers, the women perform their prayers on a balcony with a view of the hall. The church is typically equipped with chandeliers and an enormously large rug, furniture is scarce.

History

Before the construction of the mosque, there was no suitable place that was big enough to meet the requirements of the Muslims in the city of Edinburgh to meet. As the number of Muslims increased, a larger mosque was profitable. Ultimately, the project managers were able to acquire a piece of land by the City Council, with the condition that an existing listed building would be obtained and used. The project ran into financing difficulties, which were solved, however, when King Fahd ibn Abd al - Aziz of Saudi Arabia, 90 % of the total donated to the project. On July 31, 1998 ( 8th Rabi ʿ ath - thani 1419 ) the mosque by his son Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Fahd was opened, who was patron of the project.
