Edit decision list

A cutting list, Eng. Edit Decision List (EDL ), the description of an edited version of a film or video. It contains a list of frame numbers or time code, which describes how snippets of source film rolls or video tapes are assembled into a finished film. The EDL contains the timecode of the In and Out points of both the source and the target range, information about video and audio tracks and transitions.

EDLs can ( video only) or (non - linear ) editing programs are created by hand or by linear editing systems exported. The EDLs of the current editing programs (eg from industry-standard Avid or Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere ) can be used to reproduce automatically cut versions with material from the original tapes, for example, on other systems or other software; about the negative section of a cut-to- video film, or when scanning only the frames used a roll of film for digital effects.

As robust standard format for EDLs applies CMX3600, which is limited to the description of cuts and simple transitions with only a few images and soundtracks and diligence in the preparation of the cut required (for example when naming the video tapes or films). To address these limitations, exchange formats such as AAF have been developed, but currently ( as of 2007 ) is not yet well disseminated and implemented robust enough to handle the exchange of data reliably.
