Edith Zimmermann

Edith Zimmermann ( born 1 November 1941 in Lech am Arlberg ) is a former Austrian alpine skier. In the 1960s, she was victorious in numerous international races and won the silver medal in the downhill at the Winter Olympics in 1964.

Career

Edith Zimmermann learned to ski at the age of six years, her younger sister Heidi was also a ski racer. Rasch showed her great talent and she was admitted to the prestigious Arlberg Ski Club. In junior race celebrated its first successes, in 1960 Austrian Junior Champion in the combination, won in the same year already the giant slalom in Seefeld and achieved some podiums.

In the winter of 1960/61, the Zürserin was included in the A-team of the Austrian Ski Federation, again achieved some podiums and won in her hometown in the traditional Zürsersee giant slalom. The next winter a victory in the giant slalom in Spittal and the third places were downhill and combination of Val Gardena and in the slalom in St. Moritz added, yet it was at the World Cup 1962 only substitute runner and did not come to a race. Shortly thereafter, she celebrated two more victories in the Giant Slalom and in combination in the Coppa Grisha in Lenzerheide. In the season 1962/63 Zimmermann won the slalom and the combination on the Axamer Lizum near Innsbruck, the departure in Davos, the giant slalom in Bad Hindelang and all three giant slaloms of the three -runway race at Arosa. With numerous other podium finishes, including second place in the downhill of the Arlberg - Kandahar race, she was seen overall, even the best runner of the season.

Your biggest success Zimmermann at the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 in Innsbruck: In the descent, she sat down with start number 11 before Traudl Hecher to the top and was then beaten only by Christl Haas. Thus, the then 22 - year-old won the silver medal in the downhill and slalom with positions five and six in the giant slalom even the bronze medal in the combination, but which counted only as a World Championship medal. In winter 1964/65 Zimmermann won the giant slalom race in SDS Grindelwald as well as downhill and combination of Villard -de- Lans and was Austrian Champion in slalom and in the combination. The Gold Key races she finished second in the downhill and third parties in the combination. In the 1965/66 season they played their last race and reached in the Giant Slalom and Downhill of Grindelwald, two second places. 1966 ended her career carpenter.
