Edmond Jouhaud

Edmond Jouhaud ( born April 2, 1905 in Ain - boucefar near Oran, † September 4, 1995 in Royan ) was a French general. He was one of four generals who tried on April 21, 1961 by a coup to prevent the independence of Algeria. At this time he was Inspector General of the French Air Force in North Africa. After the failed coup, he was appointed deputy Raoul Salans in the right terrorist group organization de l' armée secrète (OAS ), which fought on the one hand against the FLN, on the other hand against the regular French army. While Salan fled Franco's Spain, Jouhaud remained out of loyalty to his birthplace.

He was captured in March 1962 by the French State and sentenced by a military court in summary proceedings to death. However, after Raoul Salan was sentenced by a civil court only to prison, the public opinion against Jouhauds execution turned. After being called to the remaining OAS activists lay down their arms, his death by Charles de Gaulle was converted into a prison sentence from which he was released in 1967. A law under François Mitterrand in 1982 resulted in his rehabilitation.

As a descendant of pioneers of Corsican origin he belonged before the coup of the most highly decorated officers of the French military. His political orientation can be described as pro-American.
