Edmund Leighton

Edmund Blair Leighton ( born September 21, 1853 in London, † September 1, 1922 ) was an English painter who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite and romantic style. His paintings mostly depict scenes from the Middle Ages or the Regency dar. When his two most famous paintings are considered God be with you! (God speed!, 1900) and a knighthood (The Accolade, 1901).

Life

Leighton's parents had died young painter of Charles Blair Leighton (1823-1855) and Caroline Boosey. After attending the University College School in London Edmund Leighton studied art at the Royal Academy of Arts. From 1878 to 1920 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. In 1885 he married Katherine Nash, with whom he had a daughter and a son who was also a painter.
