The Edmund Pettus Bridge is a bridge that carries U.S. Highway 80 in Selma (Alabama ) over the Alabama River. Built in 1940, the bridge is named after General Edmund Winston Pettus, a former Brigadier General of the Confederate Army and U.S. Senator from Alabama. The bridge is designed as a steel arch bridge with 76 m span. It became known as the place where the police on March 7, 1965, the first Selma -to- Montgomery march was staying.
