Edmund ter Meer

Edmund ter Meer ( born July 31, 1852 in Krefeld, † November 5, 1931 in Krefeld- Uerdingen; Complete name: Hermann Edmund ter Meer ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur. He was the son of Hermann Eduard ter Meer and father of Fritz ter Meer.

Life

After studying chemistry and subsequent promotion as well as practical activities in scientific laboratories ( factory of his uncle Henry Tillman, a brief spell at BASF ) he founded in 1877 on the banks of the Rhine Uerdinger Teerfarbenfabrik Dr. E. ter Meer & Cie. From the place in the year 1896 merger with the chemical factories, vorm. J. Weiler & Cie. Lastly in Uerdinger work Farbenfabriken Bayer AG.

Its social responsibility as a business owner, ter Meer was justified by the establishment of a company health insurance (1885), a pension fund for employees (1898 ) and a provident fund (1903 ).

In addition, he was also active in local politics: Edmund ter Meer was from 1886 to 1919 and from 1920 to 1924 for the National Liberal Party of the City Council of the City of Uerdingen, from 1899 to 1919, he was also an honorary city councilor. During the Empire, he was honored for his achievements with the presentation of non-academic titles of Commerce (1899 ) and Secret of Commerce (1911 ).

Ter Meer proved to be a supporter of the education system, particularly the later Uerdinger High School (now College Fabritianum ). For the expansion of higher city school, he donated 25,000 marks. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the city Uerdingen awarded him an honorary citizen.

In Krefeld, he was a member of the boards of the Museum Association and the Chamber of Commerce and the Board of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry.

The Privy founded by him in 1927, Dr. E. ter Meer Foundation awards annually to Dr. Edmund ter Meer Award. Carrier is since 1948 the University of Bonn society.
