Eduard Heyck

Edward (Karl Heinrich Berthold) Heyck (* May 30, 1862 in Doberan, † July 11, 1941 in Ermatingen, Switzerland ) was a German art historian, editor, writer and poet.

Life

Eduard Heyck was a son of the nursery owner and privateers Heyck Eduard (1836-1903), a son of the writer and poet Wilhelm Jensen (1837-1911) and the father of Hans Heyck (1891-1972) and Hartwig Heyck ( 1912-1982 ). His first wife, Maina Heyck -Jensen (1870-1940), was a painter and an occasional writer.

Eduard Heyck studied comparative linguistics, history and art history in Leipzig, Jena and Heidelberg. After his excellent in Heidelberg doctoral dissertation on " Genoa and its navy in the age of the Crusades " (1886 ) was Heyck lecturer in Freiburg (Breisgau ), 1892 appointed as Associate Professor of History in Heidelberg. From 1898, he lived as a freelance scholar in Munich and Berlin, moved in 1909 as a private scholar to Ermatingen ( Switzerland ) and died there in 1941. Eduard Heyck was twice married and the father of three sons and one daughter.

Work

Heyck was a versatile historian, editor, writer and poet. 1891, as a young teacher, he wrote on behalf of the Baden Historical Commission, a " History of the Dukes of Zahringen " which was reprinted a hundred years after publication as a standard work. Other works include, without limitation Heycks a three-volume " German History", " The Allgemeine Zeitung 1798-1898 " (1898 ) " Letters of a fraternity in Heidelberg 1914/1918 " and " height fire. A German reader".

As a freelance scholar Heyck held many lectures in Germany, took part in 1898 of the imperial journey to Palestine and made around the turn of the century by order of the German ambassador, Count Arco a lecture tour to Brazil.

Eduard Heyck was an enthusiastic fraternity. From 1893 until his death, nearly fifty years, he was editor of the " Allgemeine Deutsche Kommers book", also called " Lahr Kommersbuch " or " ADK " called. In addition to his editorial work, he also controlled himself with some lyrics. During his tenure as editor of 450,000 copies of the ADK were launched. Heyck was first editor and author of several published from 1897 " monographs on the history of the world " of publishing Velhagen & Klasing, which he oversaw for nearly forty years. The "Artist monographs " of the same publishing house he contributed several works in also. In the course of his long life Heyck published dozens of articles on historical, cultural, historical and artistic topics.

Also called Bibliophile Heyck was active. 1899-1900 he took over the presidency of the first founded by Fedor von Zobeltitz society of bibliophiles and was for several years the board of the society. For his 75th birthday, was awarded the Goethe Medal for Art and Science Eduard Heyck of Hitler.
