Eduard Seler

Eduard Georg Seler ( born December 5, 1849 in Crossen an der Oder, Brandenburg Province, † November 23, 1922 in Berlin) was Altamerikanist and Altmexikanist.

Life

1876 ​​taught at the Seler Dorotheenstädtischer Gymnasium in Berlin. The point he was forced to retire for health reasons and work until his marriage as a private scholar. He studied mathematics, mineralogy, botany and paleontology. In 1887 he received his doctorate in Leipzig Mayan languages ​​. In 1892 he was assistant manager at the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin. In 1894 he completed his habilitation in Berlin about Mexican manuscripts. Between 1887 and 1910 he made six trips to Mexico and created an extensive archaeological and botanical collection. In 1899 he became Professor of American languages ​​, ethnology and archeology at the University of Berlin. In 1903 he took over the management of the America Department at the Museum of Ethnology. From 1910 to 1911 he held the position of Director of the International Archaeological Institute in Mexico.

In his scientific work, Seler dealt mainly with ancient Indian scriptures, religions and myths. Seler is considered the founder of the German Altmexikanistik and Anthropology of the Americas.

In 1919 he was made an honorary member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory.

Seler was buried in the cemetery Steglitz in Berlin- Steglitz. The tomb is one of the graves honor the State of Berlin.

Part of estate of Eduard Seler is located in the Ibero -American Institute of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin.

Seler was with Cecilia Seler -Sachs (1855-1935) married, which helped him much in his travels and research. You managed after his death the estate, it published publications and has lectured for America's history.
