Eduard von Martens

Carl Eduard von Martens ( often only Eduard von Martens, * 1831 in Stuttgart, † 1904 in Berlin) was a German zoologist, especially malacologist.

He studied at the universities of Tübingen, Stuttgart and Munich. In 1860, he took part in an expedition to East Asia in part as a responsible zoologist. After completion of the expedition in 1862 undertook Martens subsequent journey through the archipelago Indomalaiischen for the further period of 15 months. Until his death in 1904 worked at the Zoological Museum Berlin by Martens as curator of the collection and of malacological for marine invertebrates.

From Martens described 155 new species, including 150 new species of mollusks, and about 1,800 new species, including approximately 1,680 mollusc species, 39 and 50 Crustaceenarten echinoderms.
