Edward Augustus Freeman

Edward Augustus Freeman ( born August 2, 1823 in Harborne, Staffordshire, † 16 March 1892 in Alicante, Spain ) was a British historian.

Life

Freeman lost his parents as a child and was educated in private schools. In 1841 he took up the study of the history of science at Trinity College at the University of Oxford on, from which he graduated in 1845 with a Bachelor of Arts.

The acquired through the death of his parents inheritance made ​​him independent, and he was in 1860 as a private scholar in Somerleaze near Wells, Somerset down to continue his work. Dual he applied unsuccessfully for a professorship, in 1884 he was appointed professor of modern history to Oxford. On one of his many trips, he died on March 16, 1892 in Alicante, Spain.

Work

In his first writings Freeman showing great interest in architecture; 1849 appeared his work History of Architecture. As one of the first he used the architecture as a source of historical science. 1863 appeared his History of Federal Government. His most famous work is the History of the Norman Conquest ( 6 volumes, 1867-1879 ), a monumental work and set the tone for that time. Other documents are concerned, inter alia, to with ancient Greece, Sicily, the Ottoman Empire, the United States, and the methods of historical research. There are also countless articles in journals and newspapers.
