Edward Boatner

Edward Boatner (* 1898, † 1981) was an African-American composer who has created many popular concert arrangements of spirituals.

Biography

Boatner studied at the Western University in Quindaro in Kansas and at Boston Konservatory and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Chicago Music College (now College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University ). He also studied privately music. He began as a concert singer with the encouragement and support of Roland Hayes - many of Boatners works aufführte in his concert program - and the choir director, Robert Nathaniel Dett. He also sang title roles at the National Negro Opera Company. For the National Baptist Convention, he worked from 1925 to 1931 as music director. Boatner was a professor at Samuel Huston College (now Huston - Tillotson University) and at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He then moved to New York, led a studio and directed community and church choirs. This allowed him to focus more on composing.
