Edward H. Smith (politician)

Edward Henry Smith ( born May 5, 1809 in Smithtown, New York; † August 7, 1885 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Edward Henry Smith was born three years before the outbreak of the British - American War in Smithtown and grew up there. He attended private schools and then worked in agriculture. As a magistrate, he worked 1833-1843 in the township of Smithtown and as assessor ( Assessor ) 1840-1843. He was 1856-1860 Town Supervisor. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1860, Smith was the first electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Luther C. Carter on March 4, 1861. About a month later the civil war broke out. Since he resigned in 1862 to run again, he retired after March 3, 1863 from the Congress. Then he was again engaged in farming. He died on August 7, 1885 in Smithtown and was then buried in the St. James' Protestant Episcopal Cemetery in St. James.
