The election of the Shura Council in Egypt in 2012 was held until 22 February 2012 from January 29th. In the first round, 3,543,972 people voted (12%? ); in the second round of 2,606,126 ( nearly 9%? ).

It was the first free election of this body at all. The Shura Council (Arabic " majlis ash- shura ") is the upper house of the Egyptian Parliament - in addition to the People's Assembly - and has mainly advisory role. Recently found the Shura Council elections in 2007 and 2010.

The Liberal Party of the Free Egyptians announced to boycott the elections for the Shura Council, as they complained about serious irregularities during the previous general election. She protested thus against the strongly influenced by religious themes election campaign.

Electoral process

The election of the Shura Council was held in two rounds:

  • The first round of 29 to 30 January 2012; the relevant run-off elections were held on 5 to 6 February;
  • The second round was held on 14 and 15 February, with the run-off elections on 21 and 22 February.

180 of a total of 270 seats in the House of Lords were determined for the election and 90 seats were appointed after the presidential election by the elected president. The original plan was to elect the Shura Council in three rounds ( the third round of voting would take place until March 5 on 4 and the run-off elections on 11 to 12 March ) was, but in the spring of 2012 accelerated the electoral process, to shorten the transition period.
