Ehud Netzer

Ehud Netzer ( Ehud Ehud Netzer NetServer or; born May 13, 1934 in Jerusalem, † October 28, 2010 ) was an Israeli archaeologist and architectural historian.

Netzer studied from 1954 to 1958 at the Technion in Haifa architecture and worked until 1962 in an architectural office. He then received his doctorate 1972-1978 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His dissertation dealt with the palaces of Herod the Great in Jericho and Herodium. In 1981, he took up teaching at the Hebrew University and was appointed professor in 1990.

Its practical archaeological career began in 1963-1965 as an assistant to Jigael Jadin in the excavations at Masada. Since 1972, he was - involved in excavations of the fortress of Herodium - with interruptions from 1987 to 1997. Further excavations took him to Jericho, Caesarea Maritima, Banyas and Sepphoris, where he uncovered the ancient synagogue. Special attention was given to international Netzer possible discovery of the tomb of Herod the Great in the Herodion in May 2007. He was considered an expert on the archeology of the Herodian period.

When visiting the excavations at Herodion on 25 October 2010 Netzer fell several feet from deep and was hospitalized with serious head injuries in the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He died there three days later. He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
