Eileen Chang

Zhang Ailing (Chinese张爱玲/张爱玲, Pinyin Zhang Ailing, also: Eileen Chang, born September 30, 1920 in Shanghai, Republic of China, † September 8, 1995 in Los Angeles, United States) was a Chinese writer and screenwriter. It is one of the modern classics of Chinese literature.

Life

In Shanghai, born and raised, Zhang her life was known for her love stories and novels, which often involve also emotional abysses and dark sides.

In 1943, she published her first novel ( "倾城之恋" Qīng chéng Zhi Lian ), with whom she became the most famous writer in Shanghai. 1953, she left Shanghai and henceforth worked with the American News Agency in Hong Kong.

The novel The Rice Sprout Song was still written in Hong Kong in English. In 1955 she moved to the USA where she continued to write novels, The Fall of the Pagoda and The Book of Changes found a publisher for a long time and were posthumously (2010) published.

Her work often deals with the tense relationship between man and woman. The film adaptation of her short story Sè, Jie by the Taiwanese film director Ang Lee won the Golden Lion at the International Film Festival of Venice in 2007.
