Einari Teräsvirta

Einari Allan Teräsvirta ( born December 7, 1914 in Vyborg (now Russia), † November 23, 1995 in Helsinki) was a Finnish gymnast, Olympic champion and architect.

He first participated in the Olympics in 1932 at the age of 17 years, reaching in two of the five events a placement in the medals, including a bronze medal in the team all-around and one bronze medal on the horizontal bar behind his fellow countryman Heikki Savolainen. He had Savolainen with the same number of points, instead of the prescribed piercing to silver and bronze, the Finnish team management decided internally that silver should go to Savolainen and bronze at Teräsvirta.

In 1936 he took part in eight competitions, but could achieve a third place only with the team. At the Olympic Summer Games in London in 1948, he finally received a gold medal in the all-around team score.

After the end of his athletic career Teräsvirta worked as an architect. He designed, among other things, the hotel Kalastajatorppa in Munkkiniemi, the Satakunta house in Kamppi and the building for the State and Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Helsinki in Kruununhaka.
