Einars Repše

Einar Repše ( born December 9, 1961 in Jelgava, Latvia) is a Latvian politician and former Prime Minister of his country.

Life

Einar Repše graduated in 1986, the Latvian State University ( now the University of Latvia ) with a degree in physics.

From 1991 to 2001, President Repše the Bank of Latvia, Latvijas Banka. During this time he was responsible for the introduction of the new Latvian Lats currency. Under Repše the Latvijas Banka pursued a restrictive monetary policy and bound the local currency via a currency board to the currency basket of Special Drawing Rights used by the International Monetary Fund. As a result, the exchange rate of the lats remained stable until today. This success made Repše very popular in Latvia.

Policy

In 1988 Repše first as founder of the Latvian National Independence Movement ( LNNK ), a political organization that operated the Latvian independence from the Soviet Union in the policy. In 1990 he was elected to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament. 2001 joined Repše resigned from his post as president of the Central Bank and went again into politics. He founded the New Era Party, a conservative anti -corruption party.

Prime minister

According to the Latvian Parliament elections in 2002 Repše was Prime Minister in November 2002. He led a coalition of his own party as well as the First Party of Latvia ( LPP), the Union of Greens and Farmers (OCD) and the party For Fatherland and Freedom.

Repšes government was known for its urgent fight against corruption and tax evasion. Various high-ranking government officials, including the director of the tax authorities were laid off or took her hat. The anti-corruption measures zeitigten some success. Thus, increased revenue from the fuel tax, which had been previously evaded notorious within a year by 30%. The revenues from other tax types, however, could not be significantly improved. The government Repše possessed in addition a strict limitation of expenditure and the budget deficit in 2003 was 1.8% as of GDP shut down by 3% in 2002.

From September 2003, broke out between Repše and the First Party of Latvia, one of his coalition partner, a conflict. Repše blamed interest-led resistance to its anti -corruption efforts. Ainārs Šlesers named Repšes authoritarian style of leadership as the main reason for the dispute. After the exodus of the First Party of Latvia from the government in January 2004, Repše had to lead a minority government and resign in February with his Cabinet.

Member of Parliament

During the reign of Indulis Emsis the New Era went into opposition, but resigned in December 2004, a new coalition in under Aigars Kalvītis. Repše was defense minister in the Cabinet Kalvītis. After a year he resigned because of a financial scandal and an investigation initiated against him criminal investigation of the state offices for corruption prevention and control ( Korupcijas novēršanas un apkarošanas birojs ). After the bad election results 2006 Repše slowly lost its influence in his party. In the difficult times of financial crisis it was made because of his often unpopular but hard-hitting action, on 12 March 2009 to the Minister of Finance of the Government Dombrovskis. On 3 November 2010 he gave up this office.

Later work

In March 2012, he was the founder of the company " Latvijas attīstībai " to promote the development of the country. The Company was converted on 15 December 2013, the party attīstībai Latvijas ( Latvian for development).

Private life

Repše is married his third wife with a rod Raginska - Repše. He is known in public life for a certain eccentricity. His hobbies include aviation, aircraft construction and painting.

Trivia

  • Because of its appearance, the Latvians have him bear the unkind nickname marsietis ( in Latvian Martian ).
  • Despite the very rare surname in Latvia Einar Repše not with the Latvian writer Gundega Repše ( Invisible Shadow, Cologne: DuMont, 1998) is used.
