Eisenhower-Dollar

The Eisenhower dollar is a coin to 1 U.S. dollar, which was minted 1971-1978.

It shows on the front of the portrait of the 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the back of the emblem of the Apollo 11 mission, a bald eagle landing on the moon. It reminds us of the President Eisenhower, who died in 1969, and to the first manned lunar landing in the same year.

The coin consists of a three-layered material. Two layers of copper-nickel (75% Cu, 25 % Ni) and in between a layer of pure copper. The copper layer is visible as a red line in the margin. With a diameter of 38.1 mm and a weight of 22.68 g of the coin was rather cumbersome and has been used in daily payments little. In 1979, she was replaced by the smaller Susan B. Anthony dollar.

For collectors also a silver version of the coin was minted until 1976.
