El Ávila National Park

Ávila is the common name for the mountain range north of the Venezuelan capital Caracas and a 2250 meter high mountain which is located in it.

Name

The story according to the Ávila mountain range got its name from a Spanish colonizers named Gabriel de Ávila, who took the land between the valley of Caracas and the main ridge line of the massif itself in possession.

The indigenous name used by the natives - the Caracas and the Taromaimas - was used for the mountain range, is Guaraira Repano and means " Big Mountain ". However, there are also other interpretations of the indigenous name.

Location

The Ávila massif represents a portion of the outer chain of the so-called Zentralastes ( span: rama central) of the Venezuelan coastal mountain dar. It extends over about 100 km between the Quebrada Tacagua in the west to Cape Codera in the east. To the north is the massif of the Caribbean Sea, in the south by the valley of Caracas.

The Ávila massif is home to the highest peaks of the Venezuelan coastal mountain range. Among them, the Pico Naiguatá ( 2765 m), the Pico Oriental de la Silla de Caracas ( 2640 m), the Topo Galindo ( 2592 m) and Pico Occidental de la Silla de Caracas with 2480m. The Silla de Caracas (English: Chair of Caracas, according to his saddle shape ) was first climbed by Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland. Allegedly took part in the expedition, the young Andrés Bello.

Origin

The Ávila massif is owed to how the entire Venezuelan coastal mountain range mainly collecting the Caribbean over the South American plate and is still growing today about one centimeter per year.

Use

During the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, the slopes were used intensively for coffee cultivation, especially the south side of the massif. Today, most of the Ávila part of the National Park Guaraira Repano (formerly El Ávila).
