El Toro (Minorca)

The Monte Toro ( Catalan: El Toro) is at 357 meters the highest mountain in the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca.

Location

Monte Toro is located in the geographical center of the island of Menorca in the municipality of Es Mercadal, 24 km east of Ciutadella and 24 km northwest of Mahon. From Es Mercadal from you reach the top parking lot on a paved winding road.

History

On the top of the ancient settlers already built a watchtower, on the foundations of a defensive tower was built in 1558. It offers a panoramic view of the entire island and is now a popular tourist destination. 1670 a Franciscan Monastery Santuario de la Virgen del Toro was built including a church in the Gothic style on the summit. In 1936 the church was looted and destroyed for the most part. As historians report that believers worshiped by menorcan Madonna figure Nostra Seyore del Toro could again be procured and is now in the Sanctuary restored.
