Elands Bay

Elands Bay (English, Afrikaans: Elandsbaai ) is a coastal village with 1,525 inhabitants ( as of 2011) in the Cederberg municipality, district, West Coast, Western Cape Province in South Africa. It is located about 80 kilometers north of Saldanha and 220 kilometers north of Cape Town.

In Elands Bay is the Bobbejaansberg tunnel is the only tunnel of the 800 -kilometer railway line Sishen - Saldanha, which was built to transport ore from the inland.

The name refers to the formerly living here eland.

Tourism

Elands Bay is known as a surfing area.

Attractions

  • Hummer (English: Crayfish Jasus lalandii ); between Elands Bay and Lamberts Bay has one of the richest fishing areas in South Africa
  • Rock paintings in the caves of the nearby Bobbejaansberg, as well as the excavations prove the settlement since around 15,000 years
  • Verlorenvlei ( RAMSAR ), a long-drawn wetland
  • Whale watching from August to November
