Electoral districts of Finland

In elections in Finland there are 15 constituencies. The electoral districts are partially independent of the other administrative divisions, such as the provincial administration in Finland.

Before Finland had to cede large parts of Karelia to the Soviet Union during the Soviet-Finnish war 1939-1944, there were 16 electoral districts. The city of Viipuri presented its own constituency is just like the area around Lake Ladoga. The new boundary line cut through the district, after which the districts were reorganized.

Parliamentary elections

In parliamentary elections, the electoral districts have a special meaning. Due to the election result in the individual districts, the allocation of parliamentary seats chooses. The districts are numbered from the south, starting with numbers 1 to 15. Each constituency are oriented to a certain number of mandates in the Finnish Parliament in the population. Thus, the constituency of Uusimaa receives ( number 02) with 35 mandates the most seats. In the Finnish Constitution with autonomy rights protected Åland ( number 05) always receives a mandate, although it has a relatively small population. In Parliament, the Åland elected closes continuously on the Group of the Swedish People's Party ( SFP - RKP ).

  • 03: Varsinais-Suomi/Egentliga Finland / Finland Proper (17 )
  • 04: Satakunta / Satkunda (9 )
  • 05: Ahvenanmaa / Åland ( 1)
  • 06: Häme / Tavastland (14 )
  • 07: Pirkanmaa / Birkaland (18 )
  • 08: Kymi (12 )
  • 09: Etelä-Savo/Södra Savolax / Southern Savo (6 )
  • 10: Pohjois-Savo/Norra Savolax / Northern Savo (9 )
  • 11: Pohjois-Karjala/Norra Karelians / North Karelia (6 )
  • 12: Vaasa / Vasa (17 )
  • 13: Keski-Suomi/Mellersta Finland / Central Finland (10 )
  • 14: Oulu / Uleåborg (18 )
