Elemicin, chemical name 3,4,5- Trimethoxyallylbenzol or 3 - ( 3,4,5- trimethoxyphenyl )-1 -propene (IUPAC), is an ingredient of nutmeg ( Myristica fragrans ).
As the related, also contained in the nutmeg, compounds safrole and myristicin has also elemicin a hallucinogenic effect. Except in the nutmeg is found elemicin luzonicum to about 2 % in tree resin elemi of Canarium.
The exact metabolism of elemicin in the body is not yet clear. Probably the substance 3,4,5- trimethoxyamphetamine (TMA ) is metabolized. This TMA is similar in structure to the alkaloid mescaline very.
