Eli Yablonovitch

Eli Yablonovitch (born 15 December 1946 in Puch, Austria ) is an American physicist.

Life and work

Yablonovitch made ​​1967 his bachelor's degree from McGill University. Then he moved to Harvard University, where in 1969 he took his Master's degree and in 1972 received his doctorate in applied physics. He then worked for two years at Bell Laboratories, to return as an assistant professor ( 1974-76 ) and associate professor ( 1976-79 ) of Applied Physics at Harvard. Then he conducted research until 1984 when Exxon Research Center on solar cells, then to 1993 at Bellcore, where he was director of solid state physics research since 1990. He was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1993. Since 2005 he has been there Northrop Grumman professor.

Yablonovitch research in the field of nonlinear optics. It examines the interaction of plasma and laser, and invented in 1987, photonic crystals. He also deals with photonic band structure, plasmons, optoelectronics, high-speed optical communication, quantum computers and quantum communication.
