Eliakim Carmoly

Eliakim David Carmoly (actually Goschel David Behr; * August 5, 1802 in Soultz -Haut-Rhin, † February 15, 1875 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a French- Jewish scholar and literary historian.

Life

Carmoly studied Hebrew and Talmud Sciences in Colmar. He then went to Paris. He worked there with ancient Hebrew manuscripts in the National Library, where he had received a job. Several publications made ​​him known in the art world.

As a Jewish Central Council was formed in Belgium, he was appointed on 18 May 1832 as rabbi to Brussels. In this position he was involved in social matters. Among other things, he supported schools for the poor. After seven years, he resigned and went back to Paris and then to Frankfurt. There he devoted himself to the study of Jewish literature.
