Elias Murr is a son of former Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Michel Murr and belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church. He studied law in Geneva, with completion in 1982. Between 1982 and 1996 he was mayor of Bteghrine. In 2000 he succeeded his father as minister of the interior; he held until 2004 this function. During the same period he has already acted as interim defense minister. On 12 July 2005 an assassination attempt was made on his life in Antelias north of Beirut, where he was wounded and killed two people.
Elias Murr is the nephew of Gabriel Murr, a businessman and owner of MurrTV, and former son in law of former President Émile Lahoud. He is the father of three children.
