Elias Phisoana Ramaema

Elias Phisoana Ramaema ( born November 10, 1933 Mapoteng, Basutoland ) is a former politician in Lesotho.

Life

Ramaema was born in the territory of today's Berea district. 1957-1958 he worked as migrant workers in a gold mine in Welkom, South Africa. After his return he became a member of the Basutoland Mounted Police, then at the Lesotho Paramilitary Force, where he rose rapidly. He was involved as a colonel in the overthrow of the government under Leabua Jonathan on January 20, 1986, was a member of the six-member military junta led by Justin Metsing Lekhanya. In 1991, he rushed Lekhanya and took over on May 2, with the rank of major general, the Government of Lesotho. In 1992, he allowed the former King Moshoeshoe II to return from his exile in Lesotho. However, his son, Letsie III. Remained, for the time being king. Ramaema initiated the democratization of the country. So he created the Order No. 4 from which prohibited political activity. The elections to the National Assembly in March 1993 were the first free elections in 23 years. Ramaema remained until 2 April 1993 at the office. His successor as head of government was Ntsu Mokhehle of the Basotho Congress Party. Ramaema was henceforth an entrepreneur. He was elected to the Senate in 2002.
