Elias Wessén

Elias Wessén (* 1889, † 1981) was a Swedish linguist and professor of the North Germanic languages ​​at the University of Stockholm 1928-1956.

Life

In his early works he studied with morphological questions in the Germanic languages ​​, onomasiology and Germanic mythologies. He has published parts of Sveriges runinskrifter ( runes in Sweden as the Runestone Salmunge ), edited medieval texts and together with Åke Holmbäck he produced a translation of the Swedish medieval state laws.

Wessén also published nor språkhistoria Svensk ( Swedish language history ) in three volumes or a grammatical explanation of the modern Swedish entitled Vårt svenska språk ( Our Swedish language ).

In 1944, he initiated the establishment of the Institute Nämnden för Svensk Språkvård, who is now called Språkrådet (Swedish Language Council ).

Wessén was 1947-1981 Member of the Swedish Academy ( seat 16 ).
