Elisabeth Eleonore of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel

Elisabeth Eleonore of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel ( born September 30, 1658 Wolfenbüttel, † March 15, 1729 in Meiningen, Germany ) was the eldest daughter of the Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel and his wife Juliane von Holstein - Norburg.

Life

Elisabeth Eleonore married first on 2 February 1675 Wolfenbüttel the Duke Johann Georg of Mecklenburg, but this died five months later. On January 25, 1681 married at Castle Schoningen finally Duke Bernhard I of Saxe- Meiningen. Although she did not share his interest in alchemy and the extravagant fondness for military affairs, the marriage has been described as happy.

The extremely artistic daughter of writer Anton Ulrich promoted the affections of her husband to music and literature greatly. After his death it turned out, by-passing of her husband's Testament, on the side of her stepson's Ernst Ludwig I to his minister of Wolzogen in its quest for absolute power. She is so responsible for continuing the next 30 years dispute in the house of Saxony- Meiningen, in which she never confessed to her biological son Anton Ulrich, whose morganatic wife Philippine Civil Elisabeth Caesar she met with cold.

That Meiningen Ernst Ludwig I was a center for the cultivation of music, is largely due to them. Through the family dispute Elisabeth Eleonore pulled back more and more, dealt with religious themes and wrote some hymns.

The Meininger Residenzschloß Elisabethenburg is named in her honor.
