Elisabeth of Hesse, Electress Palatine

Elisabeth of Hesse ( born February 13, 1539 Kassel, † March 15, 1582 in Heidelberg) was Princess of Hesse and by marriage Electress of the Palatinate.

Life

Elizabeth was a daughter of the Landgrave Philipp I of Hesse (1504-1567) from his marriage to Christine (1505-1549), daughter of Duke George of Saxony.

She married on 8 July 1560 in Marburg Elector Ludwig VI. of the Palatinate ( 1539-1582 ). The couple resided until the government takeover of Louis Amberg. Even under the influence of his devout Lutheran wife restituted Ludwig Lutheranism in the Palatinate.

The ever- ailing Louis had determined in his will, in addition to Duke Ludwig of Württemberg Margrave Georg Friedrich of Ansbach, his wife Elizabeth and her brother Louis as regent for his son Frederick. But the post of administrator of the Palatinate Count Palatine Johann Casimir of claimed simmering as agnate of the Elector. Together with the Mitvormündern processed Elisabeth unsuccessful at Imperial High Court against John II Casimir. Here, John Casimir was also supported by Elizabeth's brother William, who was afraid of the strict Lutheran influence on Friedrich and the Politics of Electoral Palatinate by his sister.

Elizabeth died but a year before her husband and was buried in the Holy Ghost Church in Heidelberg.

From their marriage, Elizabeth had 12 children, of whom only three survived to adulthood:
